Note to reader: this is not “real time”, and is only for paid subscribers. Just letting you know that these things happen to us, too!

I wonder how long it takes after the emotional chaos and horrid worry of a dark chocolate scare before the terrifying experience becomes a good story.

However long it is, I am most certainly not there.

I write this from Hawaii, where we are ostensibly supposed to be relaxing on a beach, reading books, and recovering from the madness of the past several weeks.

Instead, I’ve spent the day glued to the phone, intermittently battling anger and tears.

Here’s what happened.

For weeks, I have been communicating with the Kauai Humane Society about doing a joint fundraiser, as I have so much respect for the rescue that they run, including their creative “field trips” for the dogs in their care. I am excited to collaborate in the future, but for today, the plan was to take a box of books into the facility and donate Puppy Brain to the next ten people who adopt a puppy.
