The Nicholberry Dispatch
Embracing the chaos of book publishing and the biggest health problem in canine medicine
BOOK NEWS
I first met Leigh, my agent, via a DM on Instagram. That was way back in early 2021 and because we live on different coasts, and because she happened to be in France when I did my signing at Shakespeare & Co, we never actually met until last week. Oh, what a sweet moment it was. And also a reminder of just how important real life meetings are. There is a sense you get about someone when you sit face to face. It’s an energy. And it was no surprise to me that I loved Leigh even more in person than I did over email and Zoom.
We talked about so many things — our husbands, our experience as lawyers, our kids, our dogs — and of course Puppy Brain. To be honest, I have been a little untethered since its launch. I am a person who very much likes predictability and a to-do list. Launching a book defies both. There is a level of chaos that is only amplified post-launch and it was so great to talk through the downstream effects with Leigh.
I was again reminded to embrace every aspect of the process, including the chaos! September is giving me a great opportunity to do so, as I’ll be doing a podcast with The Brain Docs (I’ll post the episode when it airs), an online panel as part of Bark! Fest (join us!), and an in-person gala with the Aoki Foundation (if you’re in Vegas, come!).
SOMETHING TO READ
The Biggest Health Problem in Canine Medicine
If you follow me on Instagram, you can probably guess what this is. I may or may not talk about it a bit. Unfortunately, it’s a subject that is just as touchy for dogs as it is for humans. And sadly, despite it being the easiest way to keep our dogs healthy, we humans do a terrible job of it. Have you guessed what it is yet?
SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE
Think Vogue, but with dogs. “We started out hoping to photograph half a dozen celebri-dogs, but everyone said yes and here we are with a dozen–16 if you count Anna Wintour’s three doodles and Mariah Carey’s trio of Jack Russell terriers.” The ears on Glenn Powell’s dog particularly got me.

SOMETHING TO LOVE
Ah yes, Shakespeare & Co. Such lovely memories. But as for the chaos of book publishing, it's good to know that at least one person--you--have found a safe harbor, and an agent.
Can’t wait to hear your podcast with The Brain Docs! I joined their “Neuro Academy” community several months ago! They are brilliant!
