The Nicholberry Dispatch
Sneak Peek into Puppy Brain and you might be exercising your dog wrong...
Welcome back to the Nicholberry Dispatch, where I bring you the latest insights into all things dog and a few things human. As always, I promise to keep it brief, but will also link to some great content that just might take you down a rabbit hole. And if you know me at all, you know I love a good rabbit hole!
BOOK NEWS
When I signed the contract with Celadon Books for Puppy Brain, I had no idea what the next two years would entail. Edits and more edits and copy edits and first passes, oh my! And a phrase that was new to me: “Advance Reader Copy.”
An Advance Reader Copy (ARC), or galley, is an early version of a book that is sent to reviewers and book buyers in advance of publication day. It is also sent to the author, who will finally get to see what their book looks like in finished form. While it isn’t perfect, it doesn’t matter. After passing so many digital copies between Celadon and me, I became mesmerized by the idea that I’d finally get to hold a close representation of the final product.
Tuesday, the box arrived. I seriously can’t tell you all what it was like to slice through the tape and see stacks of my book within. Surreal. I’ll be posting my unboxing on Instagram, so stay tuned for that! But when I launched this newsletter, I promised you behind the scenes stories and sneak peaks. So in keeping with that promise, here you go:
SOMETHING TO LEARN
Friends and Fiction with Kristin Hannah
In a previous edition, I told you that I was excited to read Kristin Hannah’s new book, The Women. Some of you got ahead of me and already finished it! (And said it was as fantastic as it sounds). I love listening to how a book came to be and in this podcast, Kristin gives the backstory. It’s fascinating and fun to hear her tell it.
SOMETHING TO READ
Physical Exercise for Active or Aging Dogs
Well. Since Harper’s diagnosis (bone spurs on her spine), I have sure learned a lot in a short amount of time. One big, enormous, gigantic thing is that I’ve been exercising her wrong. Sort of. While there is a place for walking in our lives with our dogs, I’ve learned that there is just so much more we should be doing. This article by Patricia McConnell will give you a seriously good start on creating a better wellness routine for your dog. I’ve decided that since Harper needs to work on her core, I will too!

SOMETHING TO LOVE
Ohhhh, I’ll go to Insta for the unboxing, and thank you for the link from Kristin—my book group is gathering tonight about The Women, and we’ve got a sweet Alaska connection with her. Kula girl is 10 1/2 now and slowed down so I’ll learn along with you. The two younger pups at 3 yo play much rougher than she can take. Core is core for me too.
I’m so thrilled for you, your readers, and all the four-leggeds who will have better lives because of you and your passion and commitment to follow through with Puppy Brain and all your social posts and outreach. I’m so happy our paths crossed in Kauai!
Congratulations!
