BOOK NEWS
Next Puppy Brain Book Club: Wednesday September 25th 12pm PST
Well, my random post about starting a weekly book club that tracked the development stages described in Puppy Brain turned into a lively inaugural Puppy Brain Book Club! It was SO much fun, as we discussed everything from the value of ENS with rescue litters to the cadence of mama’s typical day. (And we did all of this sitting in front of the whelping box, so attendees were able to see and hear the puppies).
You all sent in excellent questions, our live book club members asked interesting follow up questions, and my dear friend Aly deftly moderated it all while reading the questions in the chat. Honestly, it was better than I ever could have imagined and I simply cannot wait for the next one.
If you can join us, sign up here and I will send a registration link. As of now, I am not posting the recordings. Hopefully I’ll figure out how to post clips, but I love the authenticity and spontaneity of a live event that won’t permanently be housed somewhere (that just changes the dynamic).
And whether you can make it or not, please ask whatever questions you have from Chapters 0 to 6 here (or leave a comment on this newsletter) and I will put some of my answers in future newsletters!
SOMETHING TO LISTEN TO
James Earl Jones Reading The Raven
Though he was 90 and left such a rich legacy, it still wasn’t long enough with this gifted and singular actor. His reading of this equally iconic poem is magical.
SOMETHING TO LEARN
Thunderstorm Phobia Strategies
This is an excellent episode of Tracie Hotchner’s DOGTALK, where Dr. Amy Pike, of the Animal Behavior Wellness Clinic outside Washington, D.C., discusses dogs who become thunderstorm phobic. From managing the environment (walk-in closets, white noise machines) to medication, she talks through strategies to help dogs, and their humans, cope.
SOMETHING TO CONSIDER
“If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” - my mother
SOMETHING TO LOVE
Who can’t relate to “mom’s quote!” LOL. Love it and so true!
Just had a thought about what would you say is the elevator speech of what puppy culture means? Is it a verb, a place, a philosophy….
And lastly, I’ve been thinking about the power of the community you (and Sandy Anderson) create. Both are intimate and personal. (I really don’t know how you do it!) and yours has a very active online community. How does this community affect families lucky enough to get a pup? The power of the videos (and digital learning), the power of the relationship with you? The power of strangers online? How does puppy culture develop curiosity in parents of pups, not only curiosity in the pups? That seems like a powerful shift that is near and dear to your work. Your attention is so on the puppy but we all have changed along the way! Intentional or not, WOW!
Okay, I’m going outside to walk with Neo! 😂
Your photography💕 That PAW!!! Beautiful...
You have a gift of pawing your way into the hearts of so many! This pawfully lovely community is great🐾
