BOOK NEWS
Eleven days. Eleven days and finally, Puppy Brain ships! One fun thing that is just a little terrifying: Audible is sending a crew to our house to film an “Audible Expert Video” (with a professional hair and makeup team - seriously?!). Just when I think it can’t get better…
I sure hope to see a lot of you at these events. I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally meet so many of you from Instagram who feel like old friends, and to see our Nicholberry families (and dogs!). We’re working on New York, but for now:
April 29th Carmel, CA
May 2nd Santa Monica, CA Zibby’s Bookshop
May 4th La Jolla, CA Private Residence (and First Responder Therapy Dogs fundraiser!)
May 15th Boston, MA Hummingbird Books
May 21st Dallas, TX Interabang Books
SOMETHING TO LEARN
I finally got a new phone and am floored by some of the things it can do. If you recently upgraded your iPhone, you’ll love this video (changing the focus of a video after you take the video? Night mode? Amazing!). And if you’re thinking about upgrading, remember that this video is for the iPhone 14. Imagine what the 15 can do!
SOMETHING TO READ
Having a Reactive Dog is Difficult and Costly, Study Shows
We spent many years riding our horses through California’s storied parks. From Yosemite to Point Reyes, the diversity of forests and vistas was staggering. But one thing never changed: the red ribbon. The red ribbon on a horse’s tail indicated to everyone near that this horse needed some distance — get too close, and you hazarded a kicking. Beyond that, it let everyone know that this particular horse didn’t want to be crowded. For some it might have felt like a Scarlet Letter (“oh - so your horse kicks!”), but to me it was always a wonderful way of acknowledging a particular’s horse’s need for space.
I recently read this article by Zazie Todd explaining that some people use a yellow leash to indicate that their dog is reactive to other dogs. A visual way of saying, “please keep your dog at a distance.” The implied subtext is, “And please don’t tell me that your dog is friendly, because mine isn’t.” And, “you’re stressing both of us out by violating our space bubble.” The article explores more of the effects on both dog and owner (and references the yellow leash). We can do better by our dogs, and by other humans.
